There seems to be a bit of misinformation out there that somehow cotton is good because it's natural and synthetics are bad. It's not quite that simple and there are a whole lot of shades of grey involved in fabric production no matter what the fiber is. Conventionally grown cotton is actually one of the worst sources of pollution due to global pesticide use and water contamination. This 6 minute video from a TED-Ed talk sums it up pretty well.
